Axis Dance -
Dance Access/KIDS! Creative Dance
This class is for kids with and without physical disabilities, including
those who use wheelchairs, have a neuro-muscular disability such as cerebral
palsy or spinabifida or have an amputation. Classes focus on
exploration of individual dance vocabulary while building confidence,
cooperation skills and developing appreciation of each other’s creative
expression. |

Children in Flight - Beginning African and Jazz Percussion, Song and Dance
This Bay Area Youth Arts class is open to children of all ages and abilities.
On any given
Saturday afternoon 30 to 40 boisterous youngsters come together for two
hours of instruction in drumming, dance and song.
Among
the percussion instruments children learn are the djembe, dundun and conga
drums. Songs and dances include the
Djolé,
a West African masked wedding festivity; the
Manjani,
a rites of passage dance from Guinea; and the Gumboot, a dance
originating from the gold mines of South Africa. Enrollment is open
and on a drop-in basis. No pre-registration is required.

Omulu Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian Drumming
Enrollment is open and on a drop-in basis for this
youth capoeira class. Created by African slaves, capoeira
is a spectacular 400 year-old Afro-Brazilian art form that gracefully
combines martial arts with acrobatics, music and dance. Instructor Carlos Aceituno is the founder and director of the award-winning
performing company and carnaval group

(Sun Drummers of African Ensemble) - Intermediate and Advanced African and
Jazz Percussion
This Bay Area Youth Arts
class provides intermediate and
advanced percussion students—collectively known as the Sun Drummers of Urban
African Ensemble, or SDOUAE--a
unique opportunity to develop advanced percussion skills, study with
accomplished jazz musicians, collaborate with traditional African dancers
and perform for the public at
festivals, gatherings and
venues throughout Northern California. Enrollment is limited and
requires instructor's approval. |

Strings of Soul - Jazz and Classical Violin
This
Bay Area Youth Arts class provides inner-city youth with a rare opportunity
to study a classical stringed instrument.
Levels range from beginning to intermediate. Tarika
is
an
inspiring teacher with a gentle, calm demeanor and passionate commitment to
children. She's also an outstanding musician who's toured
internationally and performed with a wide variety of artists—from classical
symphonies to West African dance ensembles. |
